What is the MEA
Aims of the MEA

What is the MEA?

On June 17th 2006, the first steps were taken towards providing media teachers in England and Wales with their own subject association. By officially constituting the Media Education Association (MEA), delegates from across the regions paved the way for an association that will seek to

support media teachers
promote media literacy work
raise the status of media education

The creation of the MEA signalled the successful culmination of months of hard work by a steering group consisting of representatives from the British Film Institute, Film Education, English and Media Centre, In the Picture and others.

The MEA aims to provide members with a comprehensive website that will develop and support an active on-line community. By providing access to a comprehensive database of resources, teachers will be able to swap ideas, ask for advice, or simply keep up to date with the latest developments in media education.

As well as facilitating communication between teachers across the education sectors from primary to further education and beyond; the website will also enable communication between media teachers, community media educators, and practitioners in the media industries.

Aims of the MEA

To try to ensure that the wider public has access to up-to-date and accurate information about media education

To provide a forum for the views and experiences of those teaching media and to offer a means of addressing their resource needs.

To disseminate information about educational research and industrial initiatives.

To provide opportunities for members' personal development through examples of good practice which enhance and promote the teaching and learning of Media Studies.

To develop reciprocal links with the industry and provide responses to press enquiries about the teaching of media; to involve practitioners from all branches of the media industries in the work of schools.

To provide conferences, a termly journal, a regular newsletter and further benefits to support the needs of the membership.

To represent the interests of, and raise the status of, media education and Media Studies as a discipline.

To promote dialogue between the varied constituencies involved in media education, both across the curriculum areas and across different sectors of education.

To respond to government initiatives and developments in the media industries and to provide a proactive and coherent voice for media teachers and others participating in current and future educational reform.
