Launch Conference
University of Warwick
Friday 18th – Sunday 20th May 2007

The Media Education Association (MEA) enjoyed a successful launch conference at from Friday May 18th to Sunday May 20th.

Media educators from across the country gathered at the University of Warwick to network, attend workshops and seminars and listen to key note speeches from some of the most distinguished names in media education.

Former head of BFI Education Cary Bazalgette opened the conference with a challenge to the MEA to ensure it embraces the primary sector and helps teachers build on the success they have already enjoyed in teaching media education in primary schools across the country.

James Durran, of Parkside Community School in Cambridge, talked about media literacy at Key Stages 3 and 4 and outlined how his school has changed the traditional approach to the relationship between English and Media departments, with all texts given equal status.

Dr Julian McDougall, of Newman College of Higher Education, spoke about the changes to the new A Level specifications and the introduction of the new national diplomas, highlighting some of the challenges facing teachers in the future.

Professor David Buckingham addressed the conference on Saturday morning and talked about the challenges of changes in the media environment and how media teachers need to respond to them. He highlighted the scale of technological change that gives students the opportunity to produce rather than just consume. He also identified how this is part of a commercial shift in the media industry and a result of globalisation.
